We haven't blogged yet because we have not had electricity - going on 38 hours (went out 5:50 am Saturday). I'm typing this from my office. We had to get Ethan out of the heat: temp=97, heat index=101.
There's a LOT of trees and lines down. I haven't heard from bruuuuuuuce or Jaclyn, but I'm sure they're okay. Also, rumor has it they're going to let enough water out of the Lake Livingston dam to flood Amy's parent's with 4 or 5 feet of water. They made it home safely (and quickly compared to the 23 hours it took them to get here...the normal 2 hours or so). They are there now trying to prepare for the worst and get back out ASAP. Two women that lived down the road from them were killed by a fallen tree. It took all day yesterday for emergency workers and neighbors to cut their way in to get the women. Please pray for these women's families and everyone in the area.
whats the purpose of flooding the area around lake livingston?
thanks for posting nathan and amy. i'm glad to learn that you guys are okay (even though i assumed you were). are you all three at nathan's office staying cool? i imagine its really hot and humid in the house...yuck.
any word from mike and dorris? how did the campus make out? were there a billion evacuees stranded in lufkin after they ran out of gas? (thats the rumor here).
They open the gates at the dam more when the water is high enough to pose a threat to the dam itself. It can only take the weight of so much water, so they have to let some through to lower the level of the lake. Of course, many people downstream get flooded, but it's nowhere as near as bad as the disaster that would follow if the dam collapsed.
Mike and Dorris are fine, but I haven't talked to them personally and don't know their exact situation. There were a lot of people stranded in Lufkin or stopped there of their own free will (and surrounding towns), but how many are still there I don't know. I do know the radio stations have been reporting who is and isn't open for business and what supplies are available. For example, many places have been giving away water and ice free, but it's going very fast.
We still don't have electricity and are spending another night at my office. If it's not on in the morning, we'll have to use a laundromat.
The office is a little akward, but it does have AC. In fact it has cable too, which is nice when we haven't received any tv stations in over a year and a half at home. We spent last night at home. We think the power came on about 4:30pm yesterday (Tuesday). Most people have power now, but some still don't.
The University came through this virtually unscathed. Many trees are down on campus, but I haven't seen even one on a car or building there. In fact, I don't think the main campus ever lost power. The YH is fine too, but I don't know if they lost power.
We never lost phones or water at our apartments. I'm sure some people did lose phones. Don't know about water. I saw at least one garage completely destroyed by a tree (with the cars in it). I'm betting damage by fallen trees is a pretty common story right now.
They've already backed off on how much water they're letting out of the dam. Apparently, they suspected the dam was already damaged, but it's been inspected and blessed. The river never got up over my in-laws road before it went back down. They're good. Still without power but good.
Nathan, It's a relief that amy's parents house isn't flooded, and I was so glad to hear you had power today.
To update Michelle, I spoke with Dorris today and they still do not have power. She said her neighborhood looks like a war zone, but the only damage they've gotten was to a part of the roof that they wanted to redo anyway so they could sell the house. So that's good. And she was thrilled cause they've been staying at Kent and Becca's all week.

dallas is not very exciting. overcast, some wind. looks like winter outside. in garland, we haven't seen any rain at all.
my family/friends in houston seem to have missed most of the storm.

Amanda's parents are from Orange, which took a pretty direct hit from the storm. They are with Robert and Amanda right now though and safe.

P.S. Amy added her two cents to this comment too.
